I didn't like the ending much, but I also found the game too difficult (sigh... not something I really want to admit!) - without hints / a walkthrough I think very few people would get close to completing. You will love the first game if you can find it, the third game (Curse of Monkey Island) is marginally my favourite of the series, and the fourth (Escape from Monkey Island) is quite good but going 3D was a bad decision.

Also loved Zak McKraken - don't know if you've ever played that one?

I've noticed a LOT of comments about MI2 being the 'least fulfilling' of the series, mainly due to its ambiguous ending. But I have to be honest ... I never did play the first one. :P Perhaps it's time I try and find it on eBay.

Not a great FPS fan myself, but I certainly agree on DOTT, Civilisation and Grim Fandango! I love the Monkey Island games, but MI2 was my least favourite! Oh well... different strokes and all that!!
